We are all aware of the fact that smoking is injurious to the body but less aware of its harmful effects of smoking on vision.  The smoke generated by smoking a cigarette, a pipe or any other tobacco products can cause a severe damage to the individual who is smoking and also people around who are exposed to the smoke.

It increases age-related eye problems like macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, dry- eye syndrome and Optic neuropathy. Not just smokers it also affects the non- smokers where they are usually exposed to eye irritation and burning sensations.

• Eat healthy foods a lot of green leafy vegetables and fruits high in Vitamin C, E and beta-carotene.

 IWG reveals the results of largest ever poll on flexible working attitudes – surveying over 18,000 professionals from a range of different industries across 96 countries

Indian professionals echo global sentiments. Believe co-working enhances productivity and improves efficiency

• 58% office-goers from India work remotely every week
• 97% professionals from India said that flexible workspace enables employees in their company to be more productive while on the move
• 40% executives from India said that the companies are wasting significant amounts of money through underused office space

 New Delhi–More than two-thirds of global employees work remotely every week, and over 50% do so for at least half of the week, heralding a major reassessment of corporate real estate, according to a comprehensive new global study.

The emergence of this mobile workforce has been driven by technological change, globalisation and changes in employee expectations, according to IWG, the parent group of leading workspace companies including Regus and Spaces.

IWG has released a study based on the insights of over 18,000 business people across 96 countries. It found that every week 70% of employees are working at least one day a week somewhere other than the office. More than half (53%) work remotely for half of the week or more, whilst more than one in 10 (11%) people work outside of their company’s main office location five times a week.

In India, the survey found that 58% of employees work remotely from locations other than one of their company’s main office locations. The survey highlighted that 40% Indian professionals believed that their companies are wasting significant amounts of money through underused office space. Also, 95% believe flexible working helps their business grow by enabling employees to be more productive while on the move. The flexibility they believe also allows companies to attract more talent (89%) as along with convenience the co-working spaces provide a more creative environment than the regular offices.

Mark Dixon, founder and CEO of IWG, said: “People from Seattle to Singapore, London to Lagos no longer need to spend so much time in a particular office.

“We are entering the era of the mobile workforce and it is hugely exciting. Not just for individual employees, but for businesses too. This is a huge shift in the workspace landscape globally, and businesses are now looking closely at what this means for their corporate real estate portfolios.”

The study by IWG also found that businesses recognised that offering flexible working strategies to their employees provided them with significant benefits:

• Business growth (89% – up from 67% in 2016)
• Competitiveness (87% up from only 59% in 2014)
• Productivity (82% up from 75% in 2013)
• Attracting and retaining top talent (80% – up from 64% in 2016)
• Profit maximisation (83%)

For generations, the world has understood office-based work to involve a fixed location and a 9-5 schedule. But an unprecedented number of businesses are now adopting a very different working model, which produces benefits for them and their workers.

The IWG survey found that flexible working not only reduces commuting time, but enhances productivity, staff retention, job satisfaction and even creativity. This is in addition to the financial and strategic advantages that it brings for businesses.

 Creating a happier, more productive workforce

The move to flexible workspaces reflects the changing demands and expectations of the workforce. 80% of those surveyed agree that flexible working helps them retain top talent whilst 64% are now offering this to help them recruit. Over half (58%) agreed that offering flexible working improves job satisfaction, demonstrating the need for businesses to provide working environments suited to today’s employees to maintain a first-class workforce.

The benefits businesses are experiencing are clear: a resounding 91% said that flexible workspaces enable employees to be more productive while on the move.

Ian Hallett, IWG Group Managing Director and Global Head of Brands and Ventures, said: “New technologies mean many of us can now work anytime, anywhere. The challenge for businesses is how to optimise this new landscape. Companies are realising the benefits of flexible working and its ability to increase productivity, job satisfaction andbusiness performance.”

The survey showed also that flexible working and the use of shared workspaces are no longer the preserve of start-ups. The world’s most successful businesses – including varied companies such as Etihad Airways, Diesel, GSK, Mastercard, Microsoft, Oracle and Uber – are already adoptinga flexible workspace approach.

Mr Dixonadded: “Changes in technology and digitalisation have led to a growing use of on-demand services generally in business, with organisations of all sizes wanting to increasingly outsource non-core activities.

“Flexible working, supported by a professional on-demand workspace network, is now being discussed by senior leaders across functions in companies including risk management, business development, human resources, marketing and strategy.

“One day soon, flexible working could simply be known as ‘working’. We are reaching the tipping point.”

World Sickle Cell Day is celebrated across world on June 19, 2018. The Sickle Cell Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008 in order to increase the awareness about the sickle cell disease and its cure among the common public

Sickle Cell disease is an inheritable, genetic and fatal disease causing red blood cells disorders which has been classified as sickle cell anaemia and may lead to death. It is the most common public health problem in the African and Asian countries of the world. Sickle cell disease is a disease in which the hemoglobin in one’s blood clumps together, causing red blood cells to become abnormally shaped. While healthy blood cells are normally round, in someone with this disease, they are C-shaped, like a sickle, and don’t flow properly.

Dr Surekha Devi A, says, “Sickle cells are sticky and block blood flow in vessels, which not only puts patients at risk of stroke, it causes intense pain. Still, there has been so little research on sickle cell disease that it is difficult even to write evidence-based protocols. The hallmark of the disease is what are called painful vaso-occlusive crisis, where patients have significant bone pain requiring hospitalization and a lot of pain medications. There has been improvement is treatments. As recently as 30 years ago, the average lifespan for people with sickle cell disease was only 14 years. Today, life expectancy can reach 42 and beyond.”

“We’ve made strides in the last 20 years, particularly with a drug called hydroxyurea,” she says.

“The medication increases production of fetal hemoglobin, which reduces the chance that red blood cells will morph into sickles. While it doesn’t work for everyone, in some, it can reduce hospitalizations. By taking this medication on a daily basis, we can ameliorate the patient for certain period,” Dr Sukehha Devi said, “and in some patients, they simply stop having these painful episodes.”

India, 27th June 2018: Every day, people go to Twitter to see what’s happening in India and around the world. One of the most important parts of Twitter’s focus on improving the health of conversations on the platform is ensuring people have access to credible, relevant, and high-quality information on Twitter. To help move towards this goal, Twitter introduced new measures to fight abuse and trolls, new policies on hateful conduct and violent extremism, and is bringing in new technology and staff to fight spam and abuse. 

New Processes for Fighting Malicious Automation and Spam

 Twitter fights spam and malicious automation strategically and at scale. The platform’s focus is increasingly on proactively identifying problematic accounts and behavior rather than waiting until Twitter receives a report. Twitter focuses on developing machine learning tools that identify and take action on networks of spammy or automated accounts automatically. This lets the platform tackle attempts to manipulate conversations on Twitter at scale, across languages and time zones, without relying on reactive reports.

 Twitter has seen positive impact in investments in this space:

• In May 2018, Twitter’s systems identified and challenged more than 9.9 million potentially spammy or automated accounts per week. That’s up from 6.4 million in December 2017, and 3.2 million in September.

• Due to technology and process improvements during the past year, Twitter is now removing 214% more accounts for violating the platform’s spam policies on a year-on-year basis.

• At the same time, the average number of spam reports Twitter received through its reporting flow continued to drop — from an average of approximately 25,000 per day in March, to approximately 17,000 per day in May. Twitter has also seen a 10% drop in spam reports from search as a result of its recent changes. These decreases in reports received means people are encountering less spam in their timeline, search, and across the Twitter product.

• Twitter is also moving rapidly to curb spam and abuse originating via Twitter’s APIs. In Q1 2018, the platform suspended more than 142,000 applications in violation of its rules — collectively responsible for more than 130 million low-quality, spammy tweets. Twitter has maintained this pace of proactive action, removing an average of more than 49,000 malicious applications per month in April and May. Twitter is increasingly using automated and proactive detection methods to find misuses of the platform before they impact anyone’s experience. More than half of the applications Twitter suspended in Q1 were suspended within one week of registration, many within hours.

These numbers show that Twitter’s tools are working: Twitter is preventing or catching more of this activity itself before the users ever see it on Twitter.

Platform manipulation and spam are challenges the platform continues to face and which continue to evolve, and Twitter is striving to be more transparent with users about its work. Today, Twitter is sharing four new steps it is taking to address these issues:

1) Reducing the visibility of suspicious accounts in Tweet and account metrics

A common form of spammy and automated behavior is following accounts in coordinated, bulk ways. Often accounts engaged in these activities are successfully caught by Twitter’s automated detection tools (and removed from its active user metrics) shortly after the behavior begins. But now Twitter has started updating account metrics in near-real time: for example, the number of followers an account has, or the number of likes or Retweets a Tweet receives, will be correctly updated when Twitter takes action on accounts.

So, if Twitter puts an account into a read-only state (where the account can’t engage with others or Tweet) because the systems have detected it behaving suspiciously, the platform now removes it from follower figures and engagement counts until it passes a challenge, like confirming a phone number. Twitter will also display a warning on read-only accounts and prevent new accounts from following them to help prevent inadvertent exposure to potentially malicious content. If the account passes the challenge, its footprint will be restored (though it may take a few hours). Twitter is working to make these protections more transparent to anyone who may try to interact with an account in this read-only state.

As a result of these improvements, some people may notice their own account metrics change more regularly. This is an important shift in how Twitter displays Tweet and account information to ensure that malicious actors aren’t able to artificially boost an account’s credibility permanently by inflating metrics like the number of followers.

In the coming weeks, Twitter will update about additional steps the platform is taking to reduce the impact of this sort of activity on the platform.

2) Improving Twitter signup process

To make it harder to register spam accounts, Twitter is also going to require new accounts to confirm either an email address or phone number when they sign up to Twitter. This is an important change to defend against people who try to take advantage of the platform’s openness. Twitter will be working closely with its Trust & Safety Council and other expert NGOs to ensure this change does not hurt someone in a high-risk environment where anonymity is important. This will roll out later in the year.

3) Auditing existing accounts for signs of automated signup

Twitter is also conducting an audit to secure a number of legacy systems used to create accounts. Concerned about trivialization; Hindus are urging French video game publisher Ubisoft to depict Hindu deities, temples, traditions, terminology and concepts with respect and accuracy in upcoming video-game “Beyond Good and Evil 2”.

In this action-adventure video game to be published by Ubisoft, Hinduism is reportedly going to play a pivotal role in the narrative, with images and references related to Hinduism, while it explores Ganesha City named after highly revered Hindu deity Lord Ganesha.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, hoped that the final product of this video-game would showcase the Hinduism concepts, traditions, objects, terminology and deities authentically; matching their characterization as portrayed in ancient Hindu scriptures, instead of giving its own fantasized or re-imagined version.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, noted that Hindus wholeheartedly welcomed entertainment industry to immerse in Hinduism, but taking it seriously and respectfully; as refashioning of Hinduism scriptures, symbols, traditions, concepts, terminology and deities for mercantile greed was likely to hurt the sentiments of devotees; and misrepresentation created confusion among non-Hindus about Hinduism. Insensitive handling of faith traditions sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols.
